How do I schedule a lesson? What ages do you teach?

Everyone is welcome! Children, teens, adults, and seniors.

What happens in a Private Lesson?

For Piano Students: A typical piano lesson will start with exercises to stretch and warm up your fingers. Each exercise is specifically chosen to help nurture healthy playing technique and reinforce good playing habits. Next we will review any music you played the week before. Finally, we will add new songs or sections of songs as you progress. Music theory and music reading skills will be taught as well as note and musical notation recognition through your weekly playing.

For Voice Students: A typical voice lesson will start with vocal and breathing exercises to slowly "warm up" the vocal chords and activate your breathing. Each exercise is specifically chosen to help nurture healthy singing technique. Next we work on the songs you have chosen to sing. Please do not worry if you do not know how to read music or do not have the sheet music or any songs in mind. Deborah has an extensive musical library and chances are she has your music or know where to find it. You will be given lots of resources at your lessons. Deborah will play your music on the piano or will provide midi arrangements to be used as accompaniment. Deborah is highly skilled at musical arrangements and can arrange your midi to your exact specifications. Performance and music reading skills will be taught as part of your weekly lessons.

What should I bring to my lesson?

For Piano Students: Please bring your piano book(s) and a small notebook to record your lesson assignments from week to week.

For Voice Students: It is helpful to bring a cassette tape to record your lesson ( the cassette recorder will be provided ). You can practice with the tape during the week, keep track of your progress, or both. Please also bring your music. Try to bring copies of the sheet music for the songs you want to sing and/or CD's or tapes. Some students like to keep their music in a folder. This is a personal preference. Please also bring WATER to keep yourself well hydrated.

How often should I take Private Lessons?

Private lessons are offered on a weekly or bi-weekly (every other week) basis. The amount of time (one hour, 45 minutes or half hour) will vary for your level and interest. This is a personal choice. At your first lesson, we will discuss your goals and figure out what will best suit your needs.

Do I have to be able to read music?

No, but it is one of the skills you will learn as a result of taking lessons.

What is the cancellation policy?

48 Hours Notice is Required for all cancellations.
Otherwise, you will you have to pay for the missed lesson.
If you give enough notice, often times another student can fill your slot.

How do I pay?

Payment is due weekly or at the beginning of the month which ever is best for you.
Method of payment is personal check made out to: Melody Line Studio. Please visit the rates page for information on fees.

What do you mean by "Performance Opportunities"?

Every few months (quarterly) students are offered a chance to perform for each other and a small audience. This is NOT required it is just for students who want to test out their skills. It is usually a small group of students at about the same level. Each student can invite a few people which makes for a good audience. The performances are fun and inspiring - everyone is in the same boat, so there is lots of support.
